Electric vs gas screed heating: what to check when ordering replacement plates

The screed is the working end of an asphalt paver. It spreads the mix, levels it and gives the mat its surface. It also runs hot, because a cold plate holds on to the mix instead of releasing it and the mat comes out torn. Two heating methods cover almost every paving machine in service, and the difference matters as soon as you need to order wear parts.

Electric heating

Resistance elements are built into the screed and fed from the machine electrical system. The plate is heated through its own structure.

  • Heat is distributed fairly evenly, so the mat tends to stay consistent across the full paving width.
  • Warm up is slower than with a flame, which is why the screed is often heated while the machine travels to the site.
  • No open flame and no gas carried on the machine.
  • The element is a consumable in its own right, separate from the plate.

Gas heating

Burners play a flame onto the underside of the screed. Heat arrives quickly, and from one direction.

  • Working temperature is reached faster, which suits short shifts and cold starts.
  • A gas supply has to be carried and monitored, and the flame is open.
  • Heat distribution depends on burner condition, so a partly blocked burner shows up as an uneven mat.
  • Burner parts, ignition components and sensors are the consumables.

What this changes when you order

The plate itself is a steel wear surface. What differs between the two systems is mostly what sits behind it, and how each of them fails.

  • Heated or unheated section. A screed is assembled from several sections and extensions, and not all of them carry heating. Two plates that look alike from above can be different parts.
  • Electric machines. A dead element shows up before the plate wears out: one strip of the mat stays cold, or the mix starts to stick in one place. That is an element problem, not a plate problem.
  • Gas machines. Flame impingement and soot affect the plate surface, and burner parts wear independently of the plate.
  • Fit. Bolt pattern, hole count, section width and left or right hand all have to match. These are the details that get a plate returned.

What to send with an inquiry

Most of the back and forth on a screed plate order comes from missing detail. These five items usually settle it in a single message:

  1. Machine make and model, plus the screed designation if it is readable on the plate.
  2. The part number on the old plate, if any of it is still legible.
  3. Whether the plate is a heated section or an unheated one.
  4. A photo of the plate top and bottom, and of the mounting holes.
  5. How many are needed, and whether the machine is currently down or normal lead time is acceptable.

A photo is usually worth more than a description here. If you are not sure which section you have, send the picture and we will identify it by model. Parts are matched from the machine model and the part number; brand and model names are used for identification only and do not imply any affiliation.
